Who We Are

Striking Sparks winners, get together to learn the night sky and do active observing. Striking Sparks winners automatically become members of the SCAS Young Astronomers, and all YAs are encouraged to attend monthly SCAS meetings.

YAs gather for scheduled events at:

  1. Santa Rosa area locations from September-May. Contact Adult Advisor Christine France for meeting schedule and location.
  2. The Robert Ferguson Observatory (RFO), 2 miles uphill from Highway 12 near Kenwood,
  3. Astronomy Nights held at local schools.

We start with a short educational session, reviewing visible constellations and planning which objects to find in the sky that night. Then we work with the telescopes.

YAs are encouraged to participate in these events and especially to bring their own telescopes to the RFO, because there are docents and amateur astronomers who can provide assistance and guidance. Visit the Observatory's website at for the latest schedule. Directions to the Observatory can be found here.

Many YAs bring their telescopes to School Astronomy Nights to share their interest with other students and to practice using their scopes. There's always an adult astronomer nearby who will answer questions. Our YAs get to experience what we all do when we share our telescopes—people ask questions that make us want to learn even more. And it's really fun!
